Vocational Service
The Object of Rotary and what Vocational Service is.
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:
- FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
- SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
- THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;
- FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
The Object of Rotary is a philosophical statement of Rotary’s purpose and the responsibilities of Rotarians. The concept of Vocational Service is rooted in the second object, which calls on Rotarians to “encourage and foster”:
- High ethical standards in business and professions
- The recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations
- The dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society
Rotarians use their professional skills to serve the local and global community. They practice their profession with integrity, and inspire others to behave ethically through your own words and actions. Rotarians help young people achieve his or her career aspirations and guide and encourage others in their professional development. You will see Rotarians acting in a way that sets these standards as a way of life. Vocational service is the very essence of Rotary. It is what sets Rotary apart from other service organizations.
